ON HER EVENING shift, Mia sometimes saw Aaron examining the people hooked up to the blood collecting machines and scribbling notes on his clipboard.

Initially, there were only six people in the program. Then it doubled to twelve. Mia was on her shift inside the tube-filled harvesting room when a donor fainted, just like she had on her first day. The woman raised her free arm slightly before melting into her seal-shaped seat. Aaron and other people in white lab coats rushed over to her the way Mia imagined they had done for her. They carried her away to a separate room, probably where Mia found herself after her own fainting spell.

A week later there was another incident. This time, it was the man with the gray beard that she recognized as a frequent donor. He had finished his plasma donation and had just gotten up from the chair when he swayed the way the trees in the forest would after one of the women at Unity had chainsawed its trunk for timber, and then he collapsed to the ground, and his eyes seemed to roll to the back of his head. There was a chorus of gasps and once again, the people in the white lab coats came running. Aaron made an announcement after that. “Let’s end today’s sessions. You’ll all still get full pay,” he said, which relieved everyone.

This time, there was a more heightened commotion with the squickety squackety of numerous shoes running on the glossy floor. When all the donors had left, the man still hadn’t come to. “We need to get him to a hospital!” someone yelled. The faces of the attendants were hewed with panic. One of them noticed Mia watching and threw her an angry look that prompted her to get on with her cleaning duties. Now she was really thankful that she hadn’t qualified for the new program.
